Burton & Morris (Maker)
For a company that was in business for about 20 years, little is known of Burton and Morris. They first appear in an advertisement in Keates’ Directory 1873, but they are not in the listings of tradesmen in that volume. They appear regularly after that as Burton & Morris, or Burton Morris & Co., china manufacturers at the Bagnall Works, Bagnall Street, Longton, Staffordshire. In 1882 we find that there had been three partners in the company, and from the 20th April 1882, Joseph Morris retired, leaving Thomas Burton and Thomas Morris as sole partners[1]. None of these individuals are identifiable from the standard documentary records such as the 1871, 1881, 1891censuses.
In 1884 and 1885 Burton and Morris registered printed designs no. 6761 is illustrated on this exhibition site. Registered design no. 19961 is listed as ‘Pattern printed. a set.[2]’ The company is not listed after 1892.
