A stoneware jug of narrow waisted form with printed portraits of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Hedworth Meux (formerly Lambton) (1856-1929) inscribed "CAPT. H. LAMBTON" Admiral Sir Percy Moreton Scott (1853-1924) inscribed "CAPT. P.M. SCOTT" and a rating from 'HMS Powerful' inscribed "THE·HANDY·MAN". It commemorates the activities of the Naval Brigade in the South African War in 1899 and the role of Scott and Lambton in providing the heavy artillery at the siege of Ladysmith. The jug has a brown painted ribbed neck and base and has the maker's mark impressed on the bottom. The title THE·HANDY·MAN refers to a poem by Harold Begbie published in the Navy and Army Illustrated 2nd December 1899.
