Allen studied at Stoke-on-Trent School of Design before working at Minton. During his time with Minton Allen won a scholarship to study at the School of Design, Marlborough House, London, between 1852-1854. Allen worked for Wedgwood from late 1875/ early 1876, becoming Art Director in 1880.
