Description:

This Longton Hall mug has a typical broken scroll handle.  It was printed in Liverpool with a portrait inscribed William Pitt Esq. enclosed within a laurel wreath surmounted by Fame. The portrait print is flanked by figures of Britannia and Liberty, standing on scrolls and pointing to Pitt. This rare portrait print is also known on a Chaffers mug in Brighton Museum.  This is illustrated by Maurice Hillis in Liverpool Porcelain 1756-1804 fig. 14.52.

The ultimate source for the Sadler print is a painting by William Hoare (1707-1792).  A more direct source is likely to be a mezzotint after the painting by Richard Houston.  Both the painting and print can be found in the National Portrait Gallery and were produced c.1754
