Most were marks of ownership and probably intended as "front stamps", but the print for "J.Skilbeck & Son, Glass and China Rooms, Market Place, Thirsk" is a back-stamp for a retailer. Most of the prints are for businesses in the Midlands and northern England, but they also include East Anglia, London and northern Ireland. The one for Old Swan Baptist Chapel (in Liverpool) is dated 1875. A few of the spellings are wrong, not only place names (Rock "Ferrey" for Rock Ferry) but also "Restaraunt" for restaurant.It is not known whether this plate was made as a sample of its wares by a pottery or by an independent decorator.
