Description:
A hybrid-hard-paste covered sugar bowl of so-called Chinese rice bowl shape. It is printed with the Man on a Bridge pattern and bears a lion mark. Wares with this mark have been the subject of considerable discussion. Their attribution to the New Hall factory has been questioned and it has been suggested that they may have been made at a contemporary Staffordshire factory. Recently, the Enoch Wood factory has been suggested as the source of such pieces. The Man on a Bridge pattern is known on undoubted New Hall porcelain but it has been contended that, as covered sugar bowls are very rare at that factory and this one is smaller and of a different shape, it may have been made elsewhere.
