Shape Type: Miscellaneous Pattern Type: Date: 1830-1840 Dimensions:
Maker: William Smith & Co. Description: Tile of white earthenware. The back is "combed" to provide keying and there are the remnants of pegs protruding from the back of the tile, which would originally have been present in each corner. The tile is decorated with an underglaze transfer print of a landscape, showing a tree and four people in the foreground, boats and a palace behind. This is printed in blue. This tile is an example of the type made prior to the late 19th century tile-making boom. The attribution to William Smith & Co. of Stockton-on-Tees, Yorkshire, is based on a known marked plate with a comparable design. Clegg, Diana and Peter. Copeland's Yorkshire Rivals? - Continued.
