Maker: Herculaneum Pottery (Probably) Description: Earthenware sauce tureen and stand designed by George Bullock, probably during his period in Liverpool between 1804 and 1813. Bullock, arguably the greatest British designer of the Regency period, is most famous for the furniture designed before his premature death in 1818. The distinctive style of his neoclassical ornament is evident in the printed decoration here. The shape is in advanced neoclassical taste. Bullock had links with the Herculaneum Pottery in Liverpool: he was paid for design work in their showroom in 1807, and also had an account with them. Herculaneum therefore seems the most likely producer of these wares. |
