Underglaze
Printing in a single color on earthenware and stoneware 1850-1900
|
Shape Type: Breakfast & Tea Wares Pattern Type: Miscellaneous Date: 1850-1860 Dimensions:
Maker: G. F. Bowers Maker's Mark: Maker's Mark: Description: An earthenware plate, printed in brown and painted over the glaze in red and green enamel. The design is named on the mark on the base and is called Eclipse. The pattern is an unusual abstract design with a hint of Victorian Gothic. There are two marks on the base; a three line impressed mark which reads "G. F. BOWERS/TUNSTALL/STAFFORDSHIRE", over this is superimposed a brown printed mark which includes the initial G. F. B., and the pattern name, ECLIPSE. The pattern name is interesting as there was not a single solar eclipse visible from England in the 19th century and no obvious reason for this choice. |
