Description:

This cabbage-leaf moulded jug belongs to a small group of porcelain believed to have been made by John Rose and Edward Blakeway at Jackfield in Shropshire.  The firm was described as the Calcut China Manufactory in a letter of December 1794 in the Wedgwood ledgers.  The factory was possibly set up as early as 1793 and probably closed in 1796, when Rose and Blakeway began making porcelain at Coalport.

The small group of pieces currently attributed to the Calcut factory comprises, in the main, wares printed in underglaze blue.  The body of this jug bears three Elephant prints, taken from the same copper plate.  On the neck of the jug are a smaller Elephant print and a Chinese landscape.  The Elephant print, which shows two Chinese figures and a small elephant in a Chinese landscape, is also known on a Calcut mug that bears the date 1795 in gilding.  A similar design is also found on earthenware.
